Sing out Sutton is a registered charity (no. 1201167) whose mission is to enhance wellbeing - joy, support, friendship and community spirit in Sutton - through the power of singing.
We were founded on the belief that singing should be for everyone - not just those who've had lessons, can read music, or can afford to pay. We want everyone we meet to experience singing as an incredible tool for improving quality of life, managing stress and connecting with others.
We run three free weekly sessions in Sutton and Wallington, open to all adults over 18. There are no auditions, no requirements to read music, and no barriers to entry. We welcome everyone - whether you're a confident singer or someone who hasn't sung since school. All that matters is you give it a go.
To enhance physical and mental wellbeing through the joy of singing - building a welcoming, inclusive and accessible community where everyone can find their voice.
Our founder members have been singing together since 2016, as part of a ground-breaking research project with Tenovus Cancer Care, The Royal Marsden and the Royal College of Music Centre for Performance Science, which explored the wellbeing benefits of singing for people affected by cancer.
Vicki, who coordinated the project, noticed that as the choir grew, what kept people coming back every week wasn't just their connection to cancer - it was the profound effect singing had on every part of their lives. The group was forced to close during COVID due to lack of funding.
In June 2021, with the support of many of those original members, Vicki launched Sing out Sutton - a wellbeing choir for everyone - opening the transformative benefits of singing to anyone in the community who wants to sing to feel good. What started as one choir has grown to three weekly sessions, welcoming over 130 people every week.
Our members include people in their 30s through to their 90s. People living with cancer, Parkinson's, depression and chronic illness. People who are recently bereaved, recently redundant or just recently moved to the area. People who were told at school they couldn't sing - and who have since stood on a stage in front of an audience and proved that wrong.
What they all have in common is they turn up, leave their troubles at the door, and always leave a little lighter than when they arrived.
"I came because my best friend moved abroad and I had a big gap in my life. Sing out Sutton has filled it with fun, music and friendship."
"When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, the choir was second to none. For an hour and a half every week I could forget all my worries."
"I joined the choir following redundancy. Being part of this community kept my confidence going - I walked into my new job feeling like myself again."
"I finally let my voice be heard after a lifetime of miming."
Over the years we've sung everything from Elvis and ABBA to The Beatles and Adele. We also appear to have a mysterious ability to make the sun come out whenever we sing Mr Blue Sky!
